#1 is the reduction or elimination your power bill. In Saskatchewan, SaskPower currently offers the net metering program to offset your power bill by giving you credit for the energy you produce.
Choosing green energy is a step in the right direction. With our federal goal of being Carbon Neutral by 2030 you can help reduce the amount of coal or natural gas used to provide electricity for your home or business.
The Government of Canada is no longer offering the Greener Home grant. That being said, The Greener home interest free loan is still available to help with the cost of solar with loans for up to $40,000 over a maximum of 10 years- saving thousands in comparison to a traditional bank loan. Please visit https://natural-resources.canada.ca/energy-efficiency/homes/canada-greener-homes-initiative/canada-greener-homes-loan/24286 for more information regarding
Currently in Saskatchewan there are no grants/initiatives available for solar or other alternatives of green energy.
Solar panels are not the perfect solution, not yet.
The process to mine the materials used to create panels is harmful to our environment. Panels are also difficult to recycle once they have been damaged or are no longer in use.
However, they do offset their environmental impact over a period of time of being in use. And, there are places that are now starting to build recycling facilities specifically for solar panels so the precious metals that are used to build solar panels can be reused again in new panels.
The more Solar arrays that are installed and tied in to the public grid, the more we can lessen the load of transporting energy through our province, which equates to less need for bigger infrastructure and in turn lowers the impact on the environment as well.
Solar is a stepping stone, not yet the answer to a greener planet, but well ahead of the use of non renewables such as coal and oil*. With Solera you can be the next step forward towards a greener future.
*At Solera we understand the need for oil, we need it in our society to maintain infrastructure and manufacturing, but know that if we continue to burn oil climate change will continue to worsen at higher and higher rates, as well if we don't reduce the rate that we're burning oil and coal, we will eventually run out of these resources for the future generations.
